What is the Dahabiya Nile Cruise?
The Dahabiya Nile Cruise is a passenger sailing boat with a shallow bottom and two or more sails that resemble a barge. The boats have been around in some form or another for thousands of years; until the 1870s, they were the norm for travelers traveling up and down the Nile.
The Dahabiya’s beating heart is the half-shaded sun deck, which has seats, a divan, sunbeds, and dining tables. The deck is an excellent spot for observing daily life on the riverbanks.
The Dahabiya boat is full of surprises, such as the opportunity to rest in a deck chair while reading or watching your kids play. There are only a few accommodations, mostly between 5-8 cabins and one or two suites available onboard. Each cabin is accented with authentic oriental furnishings. They offer a private bathroom with enough space for two people. It also includes individual air conditioning and heating controls.
The Dahabiya Nile Cruise is based on the design of original Dahabiya boats from the late 18th and early 19th centuries and is powered entirely by the wind. There are no motors like the other bigger Nile River Cruise, and the only sounds are the breeze through the sail and the water breaking over the bow!
These sailing boats are full of character and harken back to the early days of Nile tourism before steamboats began plying the river; they are reminiscent of all the renowned 19th-century Nile visitors and can accommodate 10 to 20 passengers.
